YVR airport now handles an average of 30,000 passengers per day and travel restrictions are relaxed
In recent days, passenger volume at Vancouver International Airport (YVR) has rebounded to around 50% of normal levels, marking the highest level of traffic recorded since the start of the pandemic.
Airport officials told Daily Hive Urbanized they now average about 30,000 passengers a day, and that figure is holding up even as the border opens up to international leisure travelers.
On a typical day in 2019, the airport regularly handled around 60,000 passengers per day.
YVR has seen traffic growth all summer, with the first major step being the reopening of the Canada-U.S. Border on August 8 to fully vaccinated US citizens and permanent residents currently in the US for pleasure travel. In early August, YVR was forecasting an average of around 23,000 passengers per day.
This was followed by the wider opening of the border last Monday to fully vaccinated international leisure travelers beyond the United States.

Travelers are advised to arrive at the airport early to go through health and safety screening protocols, and to ensure they meet the travel requirements for their destination.
“This is another positive step in the government’s measured and risk-based approach to reopening travel and tourism to Canada. At YVR, we are ready to welcome passengers back and are working with our many partners to not only implement these measures, but also to keep our community informed of what the journey will be like when everyone can resume the journey ” , reads a statement from the Vancouver Airports Authority to Daily Hive Urbanized.
“With the relaxation of these travel measures, we expect longer wait times due to increased passenger numbers. We are committed to keeping passengers informed of any change in the travel experience. “
YVR has rehired frontline staff and reopened more areas, services and amenities in the terminal building to cope with the influx of passengers.
