US tourists caught in ‘shooting’ incident at Cancun International Airport

Chaotic scenes erupted at Cancun International Airport on Monday morning after a suspected shooting just outside the airport’s main terminal.

Video footage taken by witnesses showed passengers running next to what appears to be an American Airlines plane on the airport tarmac. Other footage showed passengers fleeing the building and heavily armed police entering the airport.

Reports claim the terminal has been partially evacuated and firefighters are on the scene. Some witnesses described a gunshot-like noise, while others reported a loud “explosion”.

There are however reports that the ‘gunshots’ might have a more innocent explanation, but that the passengers were caught in a panic.

The normally safe tourist enclave of Cancun has been rocked by a wave of violent crime in recent months. In December, gunfire erupted in a Cancun resort town, forcing tourists to take shelter. This incident, no one was injured,

But in January, two Canadians were shot dead at the upscale Xcaret Mexico hotel in Playa del Carmen, about 45 miles south of Cancun.

Armed police have recently been deployed to popular resorts in an attempt to stem the tide of violent crime.
