Runway Rehabilitation, Air Service Investigation Underway at Airport – Mississippi’s Best Community Newspaper

NATCHEZ – Work begins on November 3 for the rehabilitation of the Natchez-Adams County airport runway.

The $ 4.8 million project is 100 percent funded by the Federal Aviation Administration with no matching funds required, said Richard Nelson, airport manager.

“We are preparing to switch to winter time. We will do as much work as possible and then we will have to stop and restart the work in the spring, ”he said.

This weather break in the project will cost the airport substantial revenues.

“It’s going to be tough for the airport because our budget is based on fuel sales. We expect fuel sales to be poor due to construction, ”said Nelson.

Airport officials are in the midst of an air service development study, which could eventually lead to a Natchez-based charter or commercial air service offering flights to one or more hub airports.

“The numbers look promising for charter flights or air transport service,” he said. “But everyone must remember that we are at the start of this effort.”

Adams County Supervisory Board Chair Angela Hutchins and Natchez Mayor Dan Gibson, along with Natchez Inc. Executive Director Chandler Russ and Nelson plan to attend meetings with airlines potentials during the first week of August.

In anticipation of this, the three are asking business owners, managers and residents of Natchez and Adams County who would host an air carrier or charter service to provide flights to and from the Natchez airport to express this fact in letters, which they can hand deliver. to potential air carriers at their November meetings.

“We’re going to approach the airlines and we’ll have a much better chance of success with letters expressing a desire for air service here,” Gibson said.

“We would love letters from anyone who enjoys flying and would love to see an airline here,” Hutchins said.

Please post, bring or email your letters on company letterhead or include your name, address and other contact information to The Natchez Democrat, care of Jan Griffey, 503 N.
