Hamad International Airport expands with stunning indoor tropical garden ahead of Qatar 2022

Doha: Hamad International Airport today officially launched its highly anticipated airport expansion project, successfully completing a remarkable project throughout the airport.

With this new extension, the capacity of the airport has been increased to accommodate more than 58 million passengers.

The next phase will begin in early 2023, which will further increase HIA’s capacity to over 75 million and build two new concourses in the existing terminal.

Speaking at a press conference in Doha today, HE Akbar Al Baker, Group Chief Executive, Qatar Airways, said the expansion marks a major milestone in terms of tourism development in Qatar through Hamad International Airport, especially considering the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.”

For years, Hamad International Airport has consistently delivered on its promise to define elegance, style and sustainability as befitting the world’s premier airport,” he added.

He also revealed that four bridges will be built on the west side and a train station will be established under the building.

Newly inaugurated facilities at the airport include:
1. Central Hall – The Orchard
2. Retail and Food Service, The Orchard
3. Oryx Garden Hotel and North Plaza Lounges
4. Al Mourjan Business Lounge – The Garden
5. Remote baggage transfer facility, where baggage can be automatically tracked, retrieved and rerouted.
6. Virtual Air Traffic Control Tower
7. Western Taxiway and Stand Development covering an area of ​​10 km2. there will be 34 new Western parking stands and 5 new parking stands located on the Victor taxiway. This will be in addition to the 140 aircraft racks the airport has.
8. Western and Midfield Fuel Farms
9. Cargo bridging

“The state-of-the-art expansion features some of the most innovative enhancements, allowing passengers to experience the world’s best airport as a destination in itself. We think people won’t want to leave so we have two hotels to accommodate our guests,” Al Baker said.

The Orchard is a 6,000 square meter indoor tropical garden located in the center of the newly expanded terminal. One of its most attractive features is the 575 square meter water feature which is an aquatic plant embedded in a sustainable biological pond, which will be the focal point for visitors to Hamad International Airport.

With a multitude of different flora, The ORCHARD includes over 300 trees and over 25,000 plants from sustainable forests around the world.

The unique design of the area allows trees and plants to easily adapt to internal conditions and thrive throughout the life of the airport – with natural light to create a calming ambience and promote a sense of well-being for all who venture indoors.

The construction of the new freight warehouses will have a facility with two temperature zones and will provide 20 landside truck docks for the collection of imported goods. The warehouse will also have a customer service office with 32 counters.
