Firefighters respond to new blaze near Colorado Springs airport

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) – Smoke is seen in Colorado Springs from a new fire that broke out Saturday afternoon near the Colorado Springs airport.

Colorado Springs Fire Department Capt. Mike Smaldino confirmed crews are responding to the fire, but information is still preliminary at this time. Captain Smaldino confirmed it is a separate fire from the Alturas Fire that started near the airport, causing shelter in place on Thursday.

The fire is currently affecting access to the airport. The main entrance is closed. Authorities advise drivers to access the airport via Powers and Grinnell, southwest of the airport.

If you see this fire, do not call 911, crews are already aware of the fire and should keep emergency lines clear for further calls.

Colorado Springs is under a red flag warning until 8 p.m. Saturday, so firefighters are asking the community to be extra vigilant when it comes to fire safety.

KRDO has a team on the way to the stage. This is a developing story, check back for updates.
