An easyJet spokesperson said: ‘A number of our cabin crew provided medical assistance to a passenger in the terminal at Gatwick Airport while awaiting the arrival of paramedics.

“Unfortunately, the passenger sadly passed away. Our thoughts are with their family and friends at this difficult time.”

A Gatwick Airport spokesperson said: “This is a sad and tragic incident and our thoughts are with the family of the deceased.

“A Wilson James staff member was waiting when the plane arrived and was in the process of disembarking the three PMR passengers when the incident occurred.

“Understaffing was not a factor in this incident, as has been claimed. It is normal for a member of staff to disembark three passengers in need of assistance by taking them one by one the short distance to the buggy waiting for them.

“A formal investigation is currently underway and it would not be appropriate to comment further.”
