Christopher Hastert appointed director of Santa Barbara airport

The city has appointed Christopher Hastert as Santa Barbara Airport Manager. The appointment of Mr. Hastert was confirmed during the municipal council of September 13, 2022.

Mr. Hastert comes to the airport with over 30 years of airport and airport management experience, including experience in military aviation. He most recently served as general manager of the Santa Maria Public Airport District, a commercial service airport that services aircraft as diverse as single-engine trainers to the DC-10 tanker that fights wildfires in the area. While there, he also oversaw an annual operating budget of over $5.5 million combined with a capital budget of $5 million.

Mr. Hastert thanked the City for giving him the role of Airport Manager and expressed his excitement to get started.

“Providing a convenient and stress-free travel experience for our passengers, promoting the well-being and success of the general aviation community, while minimizing impacts to nearby areas, are my primary goals and objectives.” he declared.

He was chosen for the highly specialized role from a selection of 42 applicants from across the United States.

“Mr. Hastert’s experience demonstrates strong leadership, business and communication skills, as well as a focus on positive engagement with the community. We are excited that he brings these skills to Santa Airport. Barbara in this complex role,” said City Administrator Rebecca Bjork.

Mr. Hastert is a private pilot and has experience balancing commercial and general aviation needs in a busy general airport. His career highlights at the Santa Maria Public Airport District include serving on the Technical Advisory Committee for the Airport Land Use Compatibility Plan Update; work on updating the Santa Maria airport master plan; successfully complete an environmentally complicated FAA land release; the relaunch of the Central Coast Airfest and the completion of the Santa Maria airport runway extension. It is certified by the AAAE and the TSA.

Mr. Hastert added that he and his wife Kathy and their sons Riley and Colin appreciate the warm welcome they have already received in Santa Barbara and that he is readily available to speak with staff and the community about their needs and waiting at the airport.

Its start date is October 3, 2022.
