How this week’s Blue Origin space flight from Texas will work
North Texas native and aviation pioneer Wally Funk and Blue Origin founder Jeff Bezos are preparing to make history with space flight this week.
Although Bezos is the headliner for the launch, the story of 82-year-old Wally Funk and how she got there is unforgettable.
It was an Instagram moment seen by millions of people. By the time the North Texan discovered she was going into space.
When Bezos walked into Funk’s life, she said she had no idea who he was. They first met when he knocked on her door.
Bezos has also opened a closed door for six decades, with the dreams of the aviation pioneer sitting on the other side.
Funk and 12 other women performed the same tests as the men in the Mercury space program in the 1960s. Of the Mercury 13s, as they became known, Funk was the only one to do better than all the others, including the men.
She became the Federal Aviation Administration’s very first female inspector and taught more than 3,000 pilots how to fly. She also holds all the pilot qualifications offered by the FAA.
At her home in Grapevine, memories fill almost every room, photos of the young girl whose mother told her to always dream big.
Funk pastors and parishioners at White’s Chapel Church in Southlake sent her with hugs.
In a lifetime of always going higher, she now looks forward to the ever-important countdown to kick off on Tuesday.
